And there is a very nice article in the issue about Old Bedford Village ! Just down the road from where I live , give or take a two hour drive.

The town of Bedford is full of history, too ! Even George Washington slept there !

A Tisket and Tasket.. A Vintage Antique Basket...

Here are a couple photos of the 25 inch early simple bunny doll I just finished making. She is toting an antique vintage child's Easter basket. Tucked inside are a few grungy strawberries.

Pin Keeps and More for TDIPT Mercantile 's February Update

It has been a busy month here at my homestead ! So far, I have three offerings for the TDIPT Mercantile's update the evening of Jan. 31st done and am working on finishing up a fourth one.

I made a couple pinkeeps, an early look doll ( this is a better photo than what I had taken before on the last post ) and am working on an early look bunny.

I took advantage of the sunshine we had today to take some photos of the goodies.

It is hard to believe January is almost gone ! But it has been a great one weather wise here and I am lovin it ! Hardly any snow and mild temperatures for the most part !

An Early Look Prim Doll

Inspired by the dolls I have seen in A Simple Life magazine and other publications, I decided to make an early look doll to offer on TDIPT Mercantile for the February update.
She comes with four grungy strawberries tucked in a burlap sack.

I have also been working on a couple other items for the February update.

And I have been making myself get out and go to the mall to walk a few laps ! So I haven't been on the computer too much lately ! It has been hit and miss for a while.

Also in a slow process of cleaning up and getting rid of things I no longer have room for.

NOTE: The photos aren't too great since there isn't any sunshine. ( Digital cameras love sunshine. )

Wearing Winter White......

Well, it is not my cup of tea.. It is about 10 degrees outside right now and it seems like old man winter has really arrived..

We have been fortunate this fall and winter since it is just now coming around actually.

The wind is blowing and howling and the snow is accumulating ..

A great evening to cuddle up with a blanket, make it two blankets, :o) and a good book and throw in a cup of decaf coffee or tea.. and some cookies !

I took the above photo this afternoon during a snow squall from inside the house !

Below are a couple photos of my new offerings on TDIPT Mercantile. Click the journal photo on the sidebar to take a peek at them.

Lots of pages in the journal that you can write on, etc. Showing is one of the recipes I printed on coffee dyed aged paper. Tea cakes were and are popular down south. It is like a sugar cookie. Behind the tea cake recipe is a recipe for Wash Day Soup.. an old family recipe.

I love the pumpkin colored shutters that the Journal and Pocket Sets are hanging on. I found the shutters in October while antiquing with my sister outside of Pittsburgh.

What is on your list of things to do and accomplish this year ? First on my list is to get rid of a bunch of old old magazines I have been hanging on to forever. I have already gotten rid of some of them.. They are pushing me out of the house ! I have Country Living magazines and Country Home magazines from way back in the 80's.

Hoping to lose a couple pounds, too !

A New Year !

The above photos were taken this summer while I was in New York City.

December just flew on by but I was able to made a few prim goodies for TDIPT Mercantile that will be updated tonight after 9:00. Above is a sewing roll I made from my own pattern. I love how the inside of it turned out !

Also, a covered journal or receipt ( recipe ) book shown below that comes with a ditty bag. The fabric covered paper mache book comes with lots of pages so you can write your own recipes or poems, etc. Tucked in the book are a couple recipes I have printed on coffee dyed paper, one being an old family recipe for soup.

** The blue fabric on the one journal matches a bonnet I have for sale.. see the photo on the right sidebar. **

Lots of photos to share !

The above photo is from my friend, Mary's house. It is a corn thing a ma gig..

Below is a photo of my son, granddaughter and grandson on Christmas day . Here I am telling my grandson to smile sweetly and my son acts up ! Coming in the door is my stepdaughter.

I hope my grandson doesn't take this to school and get in trouble...remember those paper footballs in school ? Well here is one that is leather and has its own goal and a scoreboard.

Okay, back to my friend's house.. (( I went there today during a snow flurry or two..ended up being more snow up her way in the North Pole on Rt. 219. And I ended up coming home in a white out on one of the darn mountains we have here in Pa. I hate snow , folks ! I have no use for it what so ever, period. And that is my story and I am sticking to it. ))

Love the prim goodies she has purchased from prim artists and all the wonderful antiques .

I enjoyed my visit with my friend even though I had to brave the snow coming and going ! She prepared a lovely lunch and I munched on her Christmas cookies, too !

I have enjoyed bouncing around all your wonderful blogs during the holidays even though I may not have left * I was here * comment ~ Such lovely decor and Christmas cheer and recipes ! I admit I am sometimes too lazy to sign in.. I have a long long password I hate to type in a lot of the time !

A Gentle Olde Soul ....

Finally...my one and only Santa for this year is finished ~ Lots of details with this sweet gentleman and he comes with his darling beloved pet sheep.

At the moment, I haven't decided where to list him for sale.. It will be either TDIPT Mercantile for Wednesday night or on ebay tomorrow night.

I made his wreath from a grapevine from my yard. I love the caramel brown color of his wool coat and his coordinating striped undergarment. His back pack matches his wool mittens !

Now to finish cleaning my house...

I was blessed today by the kindness fairy ! In the mail today, there was a big , plump package ! The bittersweet pillow, that I mentioned to Linda, that I just loved !

It was also a nice surprise since I am cooped up right now from having a hernia operation last week ! Yes, women do get hernias, so stop lifting anything heavy right now ! LOL

I love Linda's stitchery ! I love the french knots on the pillow for berries. I will be danged if I can make french knots anymore ! I have lost my touch with making them ! The fabric on the pillow is a perfect match for this darling bittersweet pillow !

I hope none of you have to go through a hernia operation ! It is the pits. And mine is in the groin area, making it very uncomfortable and painful.

I am so tired of having to sleep on my back ! And not being able to pick up anything off the floor , etc. etc. It is even hard to cough or sneeze. Oh, did I mention pain , yet ? :o)

Thank you, Linda, for such a sweet gift ! I will treasure it always !

Zeleinople Fall Festival ~ Antique Store ~ Log Cabin Inn

The above photo and several below were taken in Zeleinope, 29 miles north on Rt. 19 from Pittsburgh on Saturday. I went to visit my sister in Pittsburgh and we took a ride out of the city and came upon the festival, so, of course, we had to stop and have a look around ! A nice little town with lots of historic buildings and homes.

The Independent Mountain Men of Pennsylvania, based in Emlenton, PA , right off I -80 were having a historic encampment there as you can see by several of these photos.

If you remember the movie , Last of the Mohicans, with Daniel Day Lewis.. the man on the right hand side dressed in brown next to the sign on the photo above looks just like him. He is a professor.

Shown below is an antique store in Wexford, outside of Pittsburgh on Rt. 19. A very nice antique store with something for everyone. It was once a general store.

Below is one of the many log homes in Harmony , PA. located close to Zeleinople. A very quaint little village started in 1804 and full of history.

Also still standing is a grist mill in Harmony.

My sister and I ate here at the Log Cabin Inn, outside of Harmony on Rt. 19. Very good food and a great atmosphere..

You may also see Sasquatch ( Big Foot ) in the woods at the restaurant.

This is the sixth day in a row now that we have had fabulous weather. The trees are in their glory with vibrant colors especially when the sun is shining on them.

Can you believe this ?

Do you know what this is ? If you guessed snow, that four letter word, you are so right. When I woke up on Sunday morning, it was snowing. A wet slushy snow, but snow none the less.

Thank goodness it melted and this was the most we received as shown in the photos, but about 8 or so miles from where I live on the higher mountain, ( 2,250 feet ~ highest point on I-80 East of the Mississippi ) there was a good inch of that white stuff.

I have never seen this before so early in October. But there has been a time or two when I was young when I went trick or treating with boots and a winter coat on over the costume !

The group I am in, TDIPT Mercantile, had a fall / halloween swap and these are the goodies that I received from Mandy of Fiddlesticks Studios.

I am just loving everything she gave me ! The stitchery is just amazing and the pinkeep to match is awesome !

In the box, there were the leaves and acorns, an autumn scented jar candle, licorice, pumpkin coffee, and pumpkin soaps.

What a wonderful swap !

September Offering and Coffee

A new offering for September that will be listed on TDIPT Mercantile ! A witch's spell journal/book with my own touches ( such as the moon face ). The Witch Spell Book is based on a pattern from folk art by dee. Tucked inside are spells from the pattern and some extra *sweet* spells from chocolate rabbit on etsy and two blank coffee dyed sheets of paper. I love coffee dyeing paper ! It just comes out so prim and old looking !

Below is a photo of my grandaughter on her first day back to college.. She couldn't wait to get to Starbucks ! I helped her move in and clean her room in her apartment complex.

Small Town Charm

These photos are from a little town called Millheim on Route 45 in Central Pennsylvania. This is the quaintest little town ! Above is a log structure that I believe was uncovered last year if I remember correctly in the center of the little village.
Below is the little park area in town. This photo taken from inside my car's windshield.

This hotel ( circa 1794 ) is amazing.. looks like it came right out of a movie set.. and is in Millheim, also.

And the photo below is Raggedy Creations's store in Millheim. I had the pleasure of meeting Felicia on Thursday briefly as she was working next door to her shop. Her Mother was minding the store.

The next three photos are from inside the Valley Showcase store that Felicia has. I couldn't resist buying one of her penny rugs.

Route 45 is my favorite road in the state of Pennsylvania. There is a round barn and numerous log homes on this route. And, of course, barns and farm land galore along with some scenic views. Old brick homes and buildings..lots of history here.

A Hazy and Hot and Hectic Day in ......

Yes, I went to New York City again this summer ~ This time I took my grandson and at 5:00 p.m. we met my Grandaughter when she got off of work.

The photo above is a hazy photo of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island to the right. It looks like I may have a smudge on my camera lens ~

Even though this is my second trip to NYC this summer, it is still exciting. I really enjoyed taking my grandson on his first trip to NYC.

This church, St. Patrick's Cathedral, on Fifth Avenue, has a lot of visitors and it is very difficult to photograph with all the people around. But people in church ...that is a good thing ! I am not complaining ! I love love stained glass , especially on church windows !

The red, white and blue lights are the top of the Empire State Building. We didn't get out of NYC until after dark because of the traffic being tied up due to an accident at the Lincoln Tunnel.

The World War 2 USS Intrepid aircraft carrier now a museum. We rode by this on the way out of NYC taken from inside the bus.

With the traffic and construction, our bus was about an hour behind schedule getting to New York and coming home was really delayed with the congested traffic from an accident and also the brand new tour bus acting up near State College closer to home and we had to change buses ! But it was a safe trip all in all, thank the Lord ! Oh, the new tour buses have seat belts on them and they don't seem to be as comfortable as the slightly older style ones.

After we met my grandaughter, we took a taxi ride, my first in NY, to Columbus Circle where there was a slight breeze and a *water park like* area where people were just chillin as you can see from the photo below.

My Grandson and I had lunch at a place called Cafe Metro on E. 42nd Street and I was very impressed with the slice of pizza I ate ! It was really delicious ! and the price was right ! The meal also came with a tossed salad and drink. All for only $ 5.95. For New York, you can't beat it ! Very friendly staff, also.

There just wasn't enough time to show my Grandson everything I wanted to in NY, but hopefully, next time !

We are having a heat wave here in the Eastern USA ! Please stay cool and drink lots of water !

New York, New York ( More Photos )

My grandaughter and me in the foyer of the New York Public Library. One of the oldest and the biggest in the United States. It was established in 1895 and was opened in 1911. Marble features everywhere. This place is worth a visit. As you can imagine, it had a lot of wealthy benefactors. The lion near my grandaughter is named Patience, I believe.

The point on the Empire State Building taken from the observation deck. It made me almost dizzy to take this photo.

The huge St. Patrick's Cathedral nestled inbetween the towering skyscrapers. It was being built in 1858 but not completed until the year 1878. Work was halted on the building during the time of the civil war.

We went into Trump Plaza. I wanted to show my grandaughter and friend the waterfall in the lobby area but it was under maintainence.

A little birdy (Ragpatch Primitives) told me this was a great place to eat and it was delicious and reasonably priced for NYC. The sandwiches are huge ! Free pickles are served with the food.

New York, New York

My Grandaughter and me in the Empire State Building before you went to the observation deck. They took your photo first then you could purchase it after coming down from the observation deck. We were actually allowed to walk down six flights of steps from the observation deck to the 80th floor where there is a gift shop, etc. and the area you buy your photo also.

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in the distance.. very hazy yesterday and it was difficult to see.

Darn, I didn't have time to go in the Hershey's store as we had to catch the bus.

The Weather Capital of the World ! Let's Celebrate Summer !

Nestled in the hills and dales of Western Pennsylvania, there is a small town called Punxsutawney, once inhabited by Indians, where the seer of seers of weather, ol Punxsutawney Phil, resides. Note. The Amish lady walking across the street on the right hand side of the photo.

Here is where the little culprit lives.. you know, the one who predicted that early spring we didn't have ? :o) Note. This is not Gobbler's Knob where February 2nd is shown on t v. This photo is at the library next to the park.

My Grandson, in the reflection of the glass , reading a book that I had just bought him. This is a photo of the inside of ol Phil's hole in the ground ! That is a mural on the wall. Phil was snoozing in the front of his digs.

All around town there are statues of Phil. Took a few photos to share them with you.

This tree clock is cute !

The little couch is in the library in the children's section. You can also see the inside of Phil's den from this section. I am sure this sparks an interest in the children of this area to read.

Punxsutawney is having a festival the week of the 4th of July.

The photo above is the real park where the movie, Groundhog Day, should have been filmed. This photo is looking down the center of the park. It is across the street from the Pantall Hotel. Also, where the movie should have been filmed.

Coal is big, or rather, was big, in this area. That is coal sprinkled around the statue's feet.

Punxsy , as we call it around here, is just a hop, skip and a jump from where I live. I finally decided to take a ride less than 20 miles from where I live to snap a few photos and for something to do with my Grandson.

It is a tad warmer to come here in June than in February !

(My Mother was born on a farm outside of Punxsutawney between Punxsutawney and Brookville.)

Hello There !

This little chipmunk didn't seem to be afraid of me yesterday as I was peeking at him through my storm /screen door. He must have stayed there for at least ten minutes and even let me take some photos of him. I took a total of seven photos and thought I would share a few of them.

He was munching on the old dried up geranium buds... so chipmunks must like geraniums along with a host of other goodies to be had.. nuts , berries, etc....

This part of the country... The Northeast.. is having a heatwave today ! For the first part of June, this is unusual.

I have been keeping busy planting seeds in the garden and sewing, etc. I had some volunteers come up in the garden. I don't know if they are gourds and or pumpkins since both seedlings look somewhat the same at first. I transplanted them and hope they make it !

~ An Olde and Worn Pony Express Mail Bag ~

Can you believe it will be June 1st tomorrow ! TDIPT Mercantile will be updating tonight, and for my offering I have made an olde, worn and prim looking Pony Express Mail Bag with a set of envelopes tied with some prim string.

The Pony Express was in service from April 1860 to October 1861 until the telegraph was connected to the west coast. The telegraph put an end to the Pony Express.

The mail bag is a design from Dee Duncan with my touches and the envelopes are of my design. The only glue used in the making of this set was to seal the envelopes.

The Birthplace of Memorial Day

Below is Duffy's Tavern in Boalsburg, Pa. near State College. A great place to eat and the atmosphere will take you back to days gone by.. It once was a stagecoach stop. It still has some small doorways and as you can see from the photos below, lots of original charm and ambiance.

On an October day in 1864, in a small village in Central Pennsylvania ( Boalsburg )beside a little church, there is a graveyard where the birthplace of Memorial Day took place. Three women, Emma Hunter, Sophie Keller and an older woman, Mrs Elizabeth Meyer were placing flowers on their loved ones graves.

The loved ones had served in the Civil War. Emma Hunter's father had been a surgeon in the Union Army and Mrs. Meyer's son had fallen in the battle at Gettysburg.

The ladies talked and found in their grief a common bond in which the first Memorial Day took place. It was from the shared grief and meeting at the graves that the women discussed their plan to honor the fallen soldiers with their family, friends and neighbors.

It was said that on July 4, 1865, an informal meeting turned into a community service. Dr. George Hall, a clergyman, preached a sermon and every grave in the cemetery was decorated with flowers and flags.

Four years after the first meeting in the cemetery, General John A. Logan, commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, ordered May 30th 1868, as the day to decorate the graves of those who died in defense of their country. He also mentioned in the order * with the hope that it will be kept up from year to year *.

Initially, Memorial Day was to honor the graves of fallen soldiers. Over the years it has become a day where we honor all of those who have passed before.

Civil War Mailbag

It was 150 years ago this year that the Civil War started. 1861 !

I have this civil war mailbag set available. I just love this mailbag set ! It can hang from an olde cupboard or you can tuck it just about anywhere.

The olde prim and worn mailbag has been sold . Thank you, Teresa.

I made the hook and eye closure from rusty wire and added a rusty bell.

The only glue used was to make the envelopes. No glue was used to make the mailbag. Just good old handstitching when needed.

The design is from Dee Duncan with my own touches.

The Strip District ( Food and Fun Atmosphere ) in Pittsburgh, PA

Below is some of the breads, roll, etc. available, too !

A favorite store of mine shown below.. The smoked swiss cheese is delicious ! And a big variety of cheeses, olives and meats are sold here and yes, I had permission from the lady weighing the cheese to take photos !

Shown below is some of the seafood sold at Wholey's.. Look at the size of those crab legs ! They also have live fish you can purchase swimming in tanks. And I believe they clean them for you also.

Fresh crabs anyone ~

Fresh herbs at a great price and an old fire engine house at the Strip.

This section of Pittsburgh is one of my favorites. The Strip offers lots of fresh foods such as breads, cookies, great restaurants and a variety of foods from other parts of the world such as Italy ! My favorite, of course. I had to buy a package of fresh Italian Love Knot Cookies.. anise flavored .. delicious and fresh, too.

There is a place out of the weather where artists can rent a spot and sell their creations and paintings.

Lots of vendors set up on the sidewalks on Saturdays especially during nice weather.

It was a great weekend in Pittsburgh with nice weather and time spent with my sister. We also went to a couple shopping complexes , Robinson Towne and The Waterworks and McNight Road where there are lots of stores ! And we were able to get in a couple long walks around her neighborhood.

So, back to sewing I go...

Got Asparagus ?

Our garden is full of asparagus at the moment, so I thought I would make something different with it ~ quiche !

Asparagus Quiche

10 bacon strips, cooked until crisp ( I trimmed off the fat on the cooked bacon )
1/2 chopped onion, sauted in a 1 tablespoon bacon drippings and a bit of olive oil
1 pound of asparagus, trimmed
1 cup of shredded swiss cheese
1 tablespoon all purpose flour ~ I used about three tablespoons of flour.
A few dashes salt
A few dashes black pepper

4 eggs
1/2 cup half and half

Asparagus spears for garnish and a sliced tomato

1 unbaked pie pastry shell ( I cheated and used pillsbury in the dairy case ) I roll it and make it thinner and a bit bigger for my 10 inch pie plate.

Directions :

Cook bacon and drain, let cool and then tear or cut into small pieces. Reserve 1 tablespoon bacon drippings to saute the chopped onion.

Cut five asparagus spears into 4 " spears for garnish. Cut remaining asparagus into 1" inch pieces. In a saucepan cook all the asparagus in a small amount of boiling water until crisp tender.. and drain.

In a bowl, toss the bacon, sauted onion, cooked asparagus pieces, swiss cheese and flour , salt and pepper till mixed. Pour into pastry shell. In a bowl, beat the eggs and cream : and pour over bacon mixture. Place asparagus spears and tomato slices on top of quiche. Sprinkle with black pepper, if desired. Or red pepper if you want a little spice in your life ! :o) Or paprika !

Bake at 400 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean and crust is golden brown.. Cover crust with foil so it doesn't burn before baking. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting.

The dh liked it .. and it was the first time I ever made a quiche !

I changed out my daffodils in the wire fence basket and put some summery geraniums in their place .

~ TDIPT Mercantile Updating Tonight for May 1st ~

My offerings for TDIPT Mercantile tonight are two Civil War looking mail bags plus four envelopes and a letter (for each mail bag) I wrote from bits and pieces taken from a Pennsylvania 1863 newspaper article.

I made a rusty wire hook and eye for the mail bag closure. There is no glue used in the making of this mail bag. ( The only glue used was to seal the envelopes. ) I have handstitched the handle on the mail bag. I just love how these mail bags turned out ! The mail bag is a Dee Duncan design with my own touches added.

The Civil War started 150 years ago in 1861.

They will be listed tonight on TDIPT Mercantile after 9:00 p.m.

My Friend's Prim House !

Tuesday Display Chain.. a Day LATE !

Actually, even a week late as I have recently acquired decor, too ! I have redone my three tiered shelf with mostly pewter ware that I have recently aquired. Before photo is below of the shelf. I will be painting this shelf black in the near future as soon as the weather warms up ?

I have also recently acquired the sieve ?( sifter ) hanging on the wall. There was a framed print there before. And the corn dryer with the wooden bobbins stuck on it. I had a collection of wooden bobbins and thought this was a great idea... saw it on the previous old primitive place blog !

My new curtains and valance. The valance is really a fishtail swag that I have sewn a rod pocket onto... about 170 inches of rod pocket for this window. I cut a swag in the middle and added a big piece of another swag to it. The fishtails swags were half price and I loved this black with the print. Also had enough to make tie backs for the osnaburg tiers I made. Hiding behind the valance are roll up blinds that I need in the afternoon to pull down so that everything doesn't fade out. As much as I love the sun, it does destroy and fade out fabric.

I also want to find a new black lamp to put on the table ( that is an old singer sewing machine ) And a new throw for the back of the chair and a pillow !

I have a lot of wood items that I want to paint black. I thought I would never get tired of red but have decorated with that color for years and it is wearing out..

What sweet goodies ! I love the pantry corn. I will have to find a small bowl to put it in and the little bunny is so sweet ! I love the black checked bow ! And the pantry cake looks good enough to eat.. makes me think of maple sugar candy ! and the cloth coasters are great !

Tuesday's Display Chain ~ Baskets..

A few of my baskets.. Above is a photo of flax in an old basket found in an antique store.. an egg rests in the basket.

Below are some faux daffodils found for 50 per cent off in a make do type basket I found the other day in a prim store in the Narrow's Creek Bed and Breakfast here in town.

I made an Easter liner for the Longaberger Halloween basket shown below.. Wish I had more of that fabric !

Below is a child's Easter basket I found somewhere for fifty cents years ago. It reminds me of a surprise that a child would receive on Easter Sunday at Sunday school.

Below is a basket tree I found near Dresden, Ohio that I filled with, of course, American made from Ohio, Longaberger baskets. I made some of the liners in the baskets.

I also made the big teddy bear back in the 90's and the star quilt on the chair.

On the old stool (( from the Walpole Woodworkers in Walpole, Mass found in Connecticut )) is an antique egg basket filled with faux eggs. The egg basket was found in Summerville , Ga for 50 cents years ago years ago. Oh, those were the days !

I won the top picnic basket at a Longaberger bingo.

Shown on the bottom shelf on the wall, the little woven grass basket was made by a lady on a corner in Charleston , S C. back in the 90's.

The pineapple that is hanging from the shelf was a gift from a friend.

Below is one of my favorite Longaberger baskets. Tucked inside is a matching pie plate.

The sun is shining here with lots of blue blue sky and the red red robins are bob bob bobbing along in the yard ... Spring ?

Joining in the 1890 Gable House Display Chain

This is one wooden bowl I have displayed on my dining room table, given to me by a very dear friend for Christmas.

A closeup of the bowl and a recently acquired pewter sugar bowl and porriger.. pewter is one of my newest collectibles. I think it goes so well with my newly acquired black coverlet. Pardon the vinyl plastic over the tablecloth, but I have a dh that is prone to setting just about anything anywhere and I just don't want it stained. Call me practical ! Don't have time to take it off as I am in the midst of trying to make two bunnies by the end of the month !

The wooden herb pot was bought from Misi of 1890 Gable house ! She has very reasonably priced goodies for sale ! I cut up a forsythia branch and placed the sprigs in the pot. Click the link below to view Misi's blog and the bowl display chain today !

GOOD MORNING, SUNRISE !

Good Morning !

The photo of the sunrise I took this morning looks like spring is here already.. but the weather is not cooperating. It is 8 degrees and the windchill is minus 4, which is warmer than it has been in the last few days actually !

The barn you see in the photo can be seen from my back deck when there are no leaves on the trees, that is. This is only one part of the huge farm complex I live near.

I live on a small mountain ( big hill ) on the continental divide of PA and this isn't the highest point as you can see even higher hilly ranges around me.

With all this cold snowy weather .. all you think of doing is eating and baking something sweet to take the pain away of being cooped up inside ! It sure is easy to put on the pounds living up north.

They are calling for more snow for this weekend and into next week ( oh, joy ) !

Spring and warmer weather can't get here soon enough ! My mind is on spring, though, as I have been busy making a couple new bunnies. I am waiting for some fabric I bought online to make their springy outfits.

A Late Christmas Gift

My friend made a vintage type putz type house for me for Christmas.. a bit late as I just received it today. Isn't it adorable ! My friend, Bonnie is so talented ! Very artistic so she is !

The house has parchment paper windows and she even painted little tiny candles in the windows ! I just love it ! And look at that tiny fence on the base ! Amazing !

These photos were taken this morning ..and as you can see we have snow.. Not to my liking as it keeps me homebound living out in the country on these hilly, curvy roads. Very pretty but I have no need for it.

Christmas Blessings to You and Yours !

Taking a few moments to wish all my blogging friends a very Merry Christmas !

( This fold out card was given to me from a friend in 1976. )

Below are a couple photos of the huge train display in the Northway Mall near the Marshall's store entrance on McNight Road on the North Side of Pittsburgh. There is no fee to enter this display and if you live close enough to go see it, it is worth the time. Lots of different vignettes set up around with the different trains. It should be on display throughout this next week anyway.

My Sister took these photos with her cell phone and sent them to my computer. We went to see the train display last weekend when I was in Pittsburgh and I didn't have my camera with me.

Now to get Christmas dinner started ! I am having the usual ham, veggies, and I think it will be scalloped potatoes this year instead of the usual mashed potatoes and red eye gravy. A New York style cheesecake with cherries on top that I made yesterday for dessert.

Christmas Lights

This photo was taken over the weekend on the North side suburbs of Pittsburgh. I runn oft on the spur of the moment and visited my sister.

Getting into Pittsburgh on Rt. 28 was no picnic or walk in the park. They are reconstructing the road and the traffic pattern is a maze , to say the least. I stopped traffic one time to get onto the lane I needed to be on ( the horns were a blaring at me ) and then had to get onto another lane to the right and a car was coming up on my right side .. well, almost hit him.. Thank the Lord, I didn't.

Then there was a wreck ahead not far from the E. Ohio Street exit and traffic was backed up for quite a while. But made it to my sister's house in one piece.

Then the shopping we did go ! We went to Robinson Town Mall area.. wasn't a parking place to be had around the mall, so we went to the stores around the mall.. Marshalls, T J Maxx, Bed, Bath and Beyond.. etc. We had a bite to eat at Max and Erma's. Fairly good food !

Lots of homes were all decked out in their Christmas lights and just so nice to look at while someone else was driving ! Thanks, Sis !

There is an empty store front in the Northway Mall on McNight Road that has a huge train display and I mean huge. Very nice for children of all ages to see.

Sunday evening we went to Ross Park Mall. Lots of folks still shopping for that special gift. Lots of upper end stores in this mall such as Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel, Norstroms, Macy's , L.L.Bean , Tiffany's , etc.. etc..

There is just so much to do and see in Pittsburgh ! Plus shopping !

My weekend with my sister was great ! Thanks, Sis !

The cookies pictured are Spiced Pumpkin Cookies that I baked this afternoon. The recipe came from Countryfolk Keepsakes's blog a couple years ago. They are such a soft delectable treat ! I love soft cookies !

The recipe...

2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg ( I used 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/4 teaspoon ginger )
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup canned pumpkin
1 egg

Glaze

3 cups confectioner's sugar
3 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all the dry ingredients except the sugar and set aside.

In another bowl, cream together sugar and butter. Add pumpkin , egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla to butter mixture and beat till creamy. Add to dry ingredients and mix well.

Drop on ungreased cookie sheet by tablespoonfuls. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Let cool and frost with the glaze.

To make glaze, mix all together.. You may need to add more milk or confectioner's sugar.

You can also frost with a cream cheese icing.. but baked goods with cream cheese should be refrigerated.

Instead of making these cookies, I should have been writing out Christmas cards and or wrapping gifts ! That darn sweet tooth won out !

Winter's White Display Chain #11

This photo was taken this morning and it came out black and white ! I am finally getting around to joining in Misi's display chain ! And today it is Winter's White. The white is really coming down today, but we don't have as much as some up north of us do.

Below is my main tree, decorated in mostly whites.. When I lived in Georgia, I missed the snow around Christmas time, so I made do with a white decorated tree and I have kept it , but now adding in some reds and vintage ornaments, etc.

Pictured above is a closeup of the tree along with two vintage Santas found in a thrift store that had to come home with me ! On the table above the Santas is a tiny nativity I purchased quite a long time ago. My son made the stable.

I made the mitten hanging on the tree some years ago.

The photo below is a set of *Silver Bells* that I made reminiscent of days gone by..that have the look of Winter's White..

The photo below is of my Fontanini Nativity Display. The figurines are made in Italy.

This is my version of Winter's White and I hope you have enjoyed it !

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas !

It's beginning to look like Christmas here finally ! Above is a grouping of my little cardboard *Japan* vintage houses and some bottle brush trees and in the center is my feather tree. I bought some of those itty bitty country tiny lights to light up the houses. The bigger houses on each end of the table are newer houses.

Notice the little Santa Claus and Reindeer in the right foreground and the little nativity scene in the center of photo.

Below is a photo of my dining room table... yea, that is a vinyl cover over the tablecloth.. call me practical ! and I forgot to take it off for the photo.

My budding pewter collection beside the brown pitcher .. two pieces ! one is a porriger and the other piece is a sugar bowl. I am not sure if the brown pitcher is old or not. I found it at an antique store in Stafford Springs, CT a few years ago. I made the figgy pudding on the bread board.

Only 20 days till Christmas ! It seems to have come too fast this year !

It's Christmas Time.......

It's Christmas time in the country ! Soon it will be Christmas day ! And I am sure not ready for it !

These *Silver Bells* will be listed on TDIPT Mercantile tomorrow night. Both sets come with a Silver Bells *Music Sheet* tag. It is hard to believe another month has passed us by already !

Since I have gotten my offerings done for TDIPT, I can now concentrate on decorating my house, Lord willing.

So far this month we have just gotten a couple dustings of snow.. nothing major. And that is just fine by me !

Take a PEEK !

This little gentleman is loaded with goodies for Christmas and will be listed on ebay this evening after 9:30. Lots of handstitching went into the making of this gathering. The trim has been blanket stitched.

It took me forever to list this set on ebay today. Photobucket has altered their format again ! It would be so nice if photobucket and ebay would let well enough alone !

My Dad in World War II while in Paris, France.

He served over two years overseas in the Army from 1942 to 1945 during the war and was in five different campaigns. Normandy, Battle of the Bulge and Omaha Beach were a few of them. He was in England, France, Belgium, Germany and Africa, also during the war.

My Dad and Sister pictured below October 2010. My Dad ~ 88 years old ~ Celebrating his birthday.

The Winters Family

This is what I have been diligently creating the last two and a half weeks.

Meet Wilona, the MOM, and Windy Lou and Wesley.

They are dressed in blue and off white wool. The Mom has an antique vintage glass colbalt blue hat pin on her hat. The little girl has vintage antique blue shoe type buttons on her jacket.

The only glue used was a bit for the body to adhere to the wooden bobbin and it is sewn on it , also. And a bit of glue for the noses of the little children. Lots and lots of hand stitching on this family ! Even the children have wired arms !

I thought this family was going to melt before I was able to get them totally finished !

Stay tuned to when they will be listed on ebay....

Have a super duper Wednesday ! The sun is shining and it is so pretty outside right now..but nasty weather is on the way here for the next few days ! Tis November !

P.S. A pretty sunset tonight .. shown below from my front door is a view of the dairy farm on the hill ...notice the lights on in the barn !

The Winters Family Snow Folk Set is scheduled to list tomorrow night. This was an all day affair.. finishing up this set, taking photos, putting them in the computer and photobucket and then listing it on ebay !

Autumn Decor at My Friend's House !

These photos were taken today at my friend's house and also of her cabin looking shed.

The above photos are of my friend, Mary's cabin shed decorated for autumn.

Below are a few photos of Mary's home with autumn displays throughout the house. Some of you may recognize a few of the primitive dolls she has bought from our wonderful prim doll artists !

Mary made the wax turkey and fixins in the graniteware pan. Her candles and other wax creations are awesome and have a wonderful scent !

Mary has a lovely and cozy home filled with the neatest antiques and collectibles !
We usually run the roads to different antique stores and I don't often get a chance to sit back and relax and visit her home since we live 45 minutes away !

Christmas is Just Around the Corner....

Pittsburgh Heart Walk at Heinz Field ~ A Great Weekend to RUN*N ..OFT

A Little Autumn Glory and Geese

Down the road from where I live, is a lake. It makes for a nice view when out for a walk. This photo was taken this afternoon. We had three days of rain, cold, damp, and dreary weather so it was nice to get out today and enjoy the warmer weather and sunshine.

We really did need the rain, though, as we hardly had any rain all summer.

This is Mandy Jean, age 14, my personal trainer who likes taking me for a walk ! She also likes to run after rabbits since she is part beagle. :o) She is also part cocker spaniel. Give me a mixed breed dog anyday, before a pure bred one. Very intelligent little gal, so she is.

The bridge (or causeway) where Mandy is standing was built in 1936 by the W.P.A. The Works Progress Administration. The date and initials are carved in the cement.

Whew ! She is finally done and she has completed her photo shoot. Now all I have to do is the description and list her by tomorrow evening when she will be on the Mercantile website.

Eleanor is loaded down with lots of goodies for the first feast. She looks great hanging or sitting by a trencher full of autumn gatherings. Nope, the trencher with the veggies are not included. :o) The antique trencher was a gift from a friend.

Autumn ~ Moonshine

Happy Autumn ! It is here ! In all its splendor and Libby's Pumpkin is back on the shelves in the grocery stores ! YEA ! The other day I made a pumpkin cake with cream cheese icing. Next is a pumpkin pie ! My favorite !

This was taken a couple nights ago from my back porch. Not a great photo since I evidently didn't hold the camera steady as it is a tad blurry. The moon had an orange cast to it ~ looking every bit like a Harvest Moon.

That is the (farmer) neighbor's corn field below the tree line under the moon. I am surrounded by corn fields, pastures, dairy cows and barns ! ( Actually, probably not a good thing as I have had allergies all summer long. )

Smicksburg, PA Apple Festival

This is the entrance to The Drying Shed, a prim shop that is housed in an old farmhouse. They have another shop in *downtown* Smicksburg.

My friend and I decided to enjoy the nice fall weather and take a ride to Smicksburg. There are a few prim stores, a restaurant and a winery nearby.

Taken near Smicksburg where a huge group of Amish folks reside. As you can see, this area is definitely farm country. Well,actually, Pennsylvania has quite a bit of farmland all over the state.

This photo was taken at the Windgate Winery not far from Smicksburg. My friend is standing behind the wagon.

This photo was taken in a little village called Coolspring between Brookville and Punxsutawney ( The Weather Capital ). The white building is a little general store. My grandmother was from this area.

Just a Little Magic Potion

This sweet prim little witch will be listed on ebay tonight. She has an antique vintage blue glass container that she is using for her potion bottle and she is standing on her SPELL BOX ! I conjured up the stencil design! What is that saying.. necessity is the mother of invention... or something to that effect.. Since there is no Michael's or any other crafty store nearby, I just made my own stencil design for the top and side of the box.

It is a pleasant, but cool pre autumn day here in Pennsylvania ! Hopefully, I will have a chance to get out and enjoy it !

Lewisburg, PA

Before I get into helping my dh paint the house, I thought it would be nice to take a break first !

So we went to Lewisburg, PA. that is along Routes 45 and 15 in Pennsylvania.
Getting there is even enjoyable along Rt. 45. This is my most favorite road in Pennsylvania ! The absolute most wonderful tranquil, peaceful and quaint highway to drive along. Make sure you have someone else drive so you can take a gander at all the old homes, farms, log homes, brick homes, big old farm houses, little quaint towns .. along this road.

I took some photos of the old log homes that are along this stretch of road , but since I do not have permission of the owners who live in them, I best not post them.. and one of the homes is for sale ! They are located in Aaronsburg.

The above photo is an inside photo of the 125 shops complex. In this old refurbished woolen mill, there are an array of shops.. It is set up like a little town inside. You can find some great deals on Longaberger baskets in a few of these shops if you are a collector. Also, there are antiques, primitives, country decor, tea towels, curtains, candles, framed prints, folk art, seasonal decorations, and lots more.

This round barn is along Rt. 45. Isn't it great !

This Country Cupboard Restaurant is located in Lewisburg along Rt. 15. It has a Pennsylvania farm style country type food buffet, plus regular menu items, a huge gift shop, lamps and lighting, candy, bakery, farm style canned food, kitchen items, a small greenhouse, clothing, heritage lace, seasonal decor and more !

The cranberry orange relish on the buffet was delicious ! Psst.. the apple butter needs a little cinnamon in it, though. The ham and bean soup was good, too. Also, the turkey, homemade macaroni and cheese casserole, and the blueberry dessert....all yummy !

Okay, back to work I go..

Autumn Harvest 1621 ~ Give Thanks

Fall is in the air ! The leaves are starting to show their spectacular splendor, and the vegetables are ripe and ready for harvesting. ( As you can see from the above photos :o) )

I just finished this little gal this morning. She is a special order for a customer.
Now, I am going to have to help my dh paint the house.. A work in progress... Painting the doors and garage doors.. six doors and two garage doors plus the posts on our back porch..

So, my doll making may be put on hold and or limited for a while. Also, windows need to be cleaned and curtains washed before the s n o w starts flying ...

For those of you who do not sew ... making these dolls and accessories do take quite some time.. and add some more time on to it with searching the internet, stores , quilt stores .. and most of the stores in my area are 1 1/2 hours away for supplies. If I told you how long it took me to make the faces on my dolls you would not believe it....

But I do enjoy it and it is a creative outlet. And I am thankful for my ability to be able to do this. Thank you, Lord. And I thank all my customers for their interest and support !

May your Labor Day be relaxing and enjoyable and safe!

Old Bedford Village ~ Bedford, PA

This quaint reconstructed village is full of olde tyme charm and history. For those of us who love old log homes and history, it is heavenly ! The dh and I went here yesterday.

There are over 40 log, stone and wood homes and buildings, some of which where there are interpreters telling about a skill and or craft such as making brooms, baskets, taper candles, and linen made from flax. There is a blacksmith, a cooper, who makes wooden barrels and buckets, a tinsmith and even a surveyor.

You can buy saucer sized just made cookies for $1.00 each in the little bakery. There is also an ice cream parlour in the village and a general store with candy for sale in jars. It is not a penny anymore, though. Two quaint school houses, one of which is octagon shaped.

There is also a tavern where you can quench your thirst or get a bite to eat. The fare is soup with bread and or hot dogs. Pictured below is the tavern.

You have to mind your p's and q's as there is also a jail !

It is a village where history does come alive and for a while you can relive a bit of our past history. There are special events such civil war reenactments, a fall festival, and an old fashioned Christmas celebration. It is open daily during the summer months, but closed on Wednesdays. September thru October , open Thursday thru Sunday.

There is a log church that you can actually rent for a wedding. It is pictured below.

This village is a good two hours away from me and makes for a nice long day trip.

On one of my prior posts, in the actual town of Bedford, you can see the stone building where George Washington had his headquarters for a while during the Whiskey Rebellion.

The real and historic town of Bedford has many little quaint shops: clothing stores, antique and craft stores, little cafes, etc.

A great place to visit in Pennsylvania !

S.B. Elliott State Park Craft Show in Pennsylvania

sweet little bread board that is holding the mice and brushes ! Darn Darn Darn it ! :o)

Below is a trencher full of whisk brooms. I collect whisk brooms, so I had to have one ! In the angel food cake pan are slices of corn.

It was a pleasant sunny day for an outdoor show. This show attracts quite a few folks from the area and is usually held on the second Sunday in July.

* Celebrating Independence Day ** on the north shore in Pittsburgh, PA

Patiently waiting for the fireworks as the sun goes down on the city. The fireworks were pretty awesome, but this view of the river with the boats and the skyline as the sun sets .. I just love it !

What a better way to celebrate Independence Day than to watch the all American sport of baseball with the home team of the Pittsburgh Pirates. And we won the game we played with the Phillies, with a score of 8 to 5 ! YEA! Let's Go Bucs !

And to be able to have this freedom, we salute our troops, past and present and future !

My son on the left and my grandson. My son is holding the mascot, the Parrot. These plush toys were given away to all the children at the game. Darn, they wouldn't give me one !

We were able to meet up with my nephew and his wife at the game. Cellphones are great for getting in touch !

We had dinner after the game and after a two hour wait at Jerome's restaurant.. He is a retired Pittsburgh Steeler Football player. This restaurant is near both the ballpark and the Steeler stadium on the North Side.

The incline going to Mt. Washington, a suburb of Pittsburgh, is on the left of the photo. The Bayer ad is a lighted bulletin board on the side of the hill near the incline. The incline is the two rows of lights going up the hill.

It was a very pleasant , but very warm day ! The weather was great all weekend actually. We left early in the morning to be able to find a place to park before it got crowded. Over half a million people congregate here on the fourth of July !

Before the fireworks began, there was a skydiving show and a boat race at the Regatta.

There is something for everyone on the North Shore along the river of Pittsburgh. There is the Carneige Science Center, the new Rivers Casino, a walkway along the river for walking or riding bikes, and the Ballparks, PNC and Heinz field.

Primitive Vintage Antique Soap Saver Cupboard Pocket

My dh and I went for a ride today and ended up in Bedford. Lots of history and places to see in Bedford. I just love the old buildings ! Lots of little shops and antique stores here, too.

Duffy's Tavern built in 1819 ~ Boalsburg, PA.

This is Duffy's Tavern in Boalsburg, Pa. just four miles from State College( Penn State ). The Tavern was built in 1819 and was once a stage coach stop way back when.
The second floor was once used as a ballroom. The stone walls are 22 inches thick.

This is my favorite spot in Duffy's Tavern. Look at that stairway ~ I love it !

An abundance of ambiance and atmosphere surround you while dining here along with good food at a reasonable price.

The drawer shown under the window was once used as a cash drawer.

The drawer underneath the cupboard had also been used as a cash drawer.

I took these photos today while dining here. The grilled chicken salad was so big I couldn't eat all of it ! The menu is varied ~ from soups to salads, burgers, speciality sandwiches, and also seafood, steak and chicken entrees. There is also a bar if you may want to imbibe.

Eating here is a very pleasant dining experience and the wait staff was very friendly.

To Dwell in Primitive Thymes will be updating their mercantile Monday evening. You are very welcome to take a peek at all the new creations the artists have come up with for the month of June.

Above are new prim cupboard door / wall pockets I have conjured up ~ which are perfect for a prim bath. I love making these pockets and adding the vintage antique finds from my antique store excursions. On the two antique vintage hankies in the bath pockets, the edging looks like it is tatting lace, but I am not sure. I absolutely adore that soap saver that opens and the talcum powder tin that still has a bit of powder in it and still smells good ! A bit of inspiration for these pockets are from Piney Creek Primitives.

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie ~ my secret recipe ....

This little pie and another one just like it went camping with my dh and his friends. It is a big hit with these fishermen out in the wilderness ! My dh's friend even told his wife it was better than hers...oh, my ! Since this pie went camping, I bought throw away pie pans and bought containers at the bakery to fit the pie. This is a ten inch pie container shown. Great for traveling and putting in a cooler.

The bottom crust was homemade, but I cheated for the top crust... it is Pillsbury in the dairy case and it is not bad tasting if you are in a hurry to make a pie and do not want to make up your own pie crusts.

2 1/2 cups 1 inch sliced rhubarb- I peel my rhubarb first of the outer layer since it is stringy

2 1/2 cups sliced strawberries

About 1/2 cup crushed pineapple , drained ~ my secret ingredient ...sh , don't tell anyone

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cup sugar depending on if you want it really sweet or tart tasting

4 tablespoons of flour

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

2 tablespoons of butter , cut up in little slices to put on top of filling before you place the top crust on it.

Heat the oven to 425 degrees. Mix together the sugar, flour and nutmeg in a bowl and add to the fruit and lemon juice. Put the mixture in a prepared ( with a pie crust ) pie pan. Let the crust hang over the edge about an inch or an inch and a half or so. Place pats of butter on top of the filling and and then place the top crust on carefully and take the two edges of the crusts and fold under and pinch together so the filling doesn't seep out . Cut a few slits in the middle of the pie crust. You can add a cut out dough strawberry for decoration as I have done.

The pie will be in the oven at 425 degrees for 10 minutes, then lower the temperature to 350 degrees for 40 to 50 minutes, depending on your oven. Place on a rack to cool. I place some foil around the edge of my crust so it doesn't burn and take it off about ten minutes before the pie is done so it browns nicely.

Pie crust ~

for two crusts

2 2/3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup shortening ~ I use some Crisco and real butter mixed to make one cup
7 to 8 tablespoons of ice cold water ~ I put ice cubes in a bowl of cold water
I add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a tablespoon of the water
Also, I add about 1 1/2 tablespoons of powdered sugar to the flour and salt.

Mix together the flour , salt and powdered sugar. Add the shortening/butter mixture throughly. Add a tablespoon of water one at a time and mix until it is moistened and dough almost cleans the side of the bowl. Gather dough into two balls. Shape one into a flattened round on a lightly floured covered piece of wax paper. Lightly flour top of dough with flour and place another piece of wax paper on top and flatten with a rolling pin until it is two inches larger than the pie pan. Place carefully into pie pan.

Repeat the process for top crust. And then flute the edges of the crusts together as I mentioned above. Place a 2 to 3 inch strip of foil around the edge of the crust so it doesn't burn.

This pie is really good !

Do You Like Heinz Ketchup ?

This is where it is made in Pittsburgh. And yes, they are lowering the sodium content in the ketchup, so I hope it tastes the same !

I couldn't resist buying a package of assorted biscotti cookies from this vendor. And they are fresh and delicious ! I bought one coconut macaroon cookie and it was the best I have ever eaten.!

I went to Pittsburgh over the weekend to visit with my sister and walk the Heartwalk in North Park for Allegheny General Hospital. After the heartwalk, my sis and I went to The Strip District in Pittsburgh. Right on the North Side , near the Strip District, is the Heinz Ketchup Plant.

Saturday mornings are packed full of vendors on the sidewalks, and it is just an awesome way to spend a few hours taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of ethnic foods and the array of shops !

My sis and I had lunch at Pamela's Diner there. I had a chicken salad and it was huge and delicious ! I could not eat all of it. We could have split one.

On Sunday we had breakfast on the North Side of Pittsburgh, not far from McNight Road, at a place called Kelly's Diner. Vases of fresh flowers on the tables and the breakfast was great !

Pennsylvania Countryside Ride

This photo is to the entrance of The Open House Shop off of I-80 exit 78( Brookville, PA. ) on Rt. 36 north about 1 1/2 miles on the right just passed the Quilt Shop that is on the left. This little shop is filled to the brim with lots of goodies. Antiques and vintage finds from furniture to buttons, prim towels, longaberger baskets and pottery, good smelling melting tarts (for your potpourri burner) that scents up the shop with a wonderful aroma and olde outside decor, some of which is shown in the photo.

Below is two photos of some *supplies* at the Bulk Country Store that is located at Farmers Inn in Sigel, PA. just 10 minutes from I-80, Exit 78 going north on Rt. 36 ~ turn right in Sigel at the blinking light and go two miles down Rt. 949 towards Clear Creek State Park. www.thefarmersinn.com

The Farmers Inn has a wonderful homestyle food restaurant with a buffet on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, mini golf, a driving range and a wildlife zoo plus Amish furniture and the Amish style bulk food store. And MORE !

This food store has a wide variety of bagged candy, some good *sodey pop* from Kutztown Soda Works, Mrs. Miller's jellies and jams, cheeses and more.

The photo below is of a quilt fabric and gift shop located off I-80, Exit 53 in Knox , PA. only 1/4 mile north. This building was once a General Store way back in 1895.

I found a few goodies at the Open House Shop and at a couple other little antique shops in the area, but it is too dark now to take photos of them. I love finding goodies to tuck in the wall pockets I have been making lately.

This was a very pleasant Saturday afternoon ride with the dh and even the rain held off until we got home this evening.

Vintage Antique Collections

These are a few things that I collect (that collect dust) ! The chickens/roosters were gifts from three different people and are not vintage. The silver colored pie plate came from an antique store in Connecticut. The crock holding the rolling pins and wooden spoons is not a vintage piece. I embroidered the pocket that is on the green checked towel. I have redone this grouping. I should have taken before and after photos. Prior to this look, I had a small quilt hanging from the bar on the shelf and the cupboard top was so cluttered with stuff that it looked messy.

It is difficult to take photos in my dining room with the light and the big dining table in the way. The lamp shade was bought in the quaint little town of Black Mountain, NC in a little prim shop.

This is part of my newest collection that I started. Olde brushes and vintage whisk brooms. I just love the tiny whisk broom hanging on the side of the broom box. The box was made by Sweet Liberty Homestead. On the little shelf is two green wax frogs made by my friend. They are a honeydew scent.

The shelf was a two dollar find in Connecticut and I repainted it. On the bottom shelf is a grass basket that was made by a lady on the street in Charleston, South Carolina. ( it's holding the pears ) The little teapots are McCoy and Hall. I have redone this shelf also. Looking at some of the prim blogs has inspired me to dust :o) and rearrange a few things.

Sneak Peek ~ April TDIPT Update Tonight

TDIPT Mercantile will be updating tonight between 9 and 10 p.m. It is hard to believe it is April already !

For April's offering, I have made two prim pockets filled with *needfuls*. I had so much fun making these pockets! The inspiration for the pocket is from Piney Creek Primitives with lots of my own touches. The labels are from Yankee Lane Primitives and the lantern lights are from Samplers Country.

My dh and I went to a huge antique mall the other day and of course, I am always looking for little items I can use for my dolls, etc. I didn't realize how much a sock darner went for ! Yikes !

Right now I am melting one of my friend's tarts in my tart burner.. oh, I wish you could take a whiff of this blueberry cheesecake tart .. instead of the homemade lasagna I am making for dinner, I should have made a big thick blueberry cheesecake instead ! :o)

I am so ready for the warmer weather and sunshine and right now the daffodils and crocus look so pretty after having had all that snow and cold weather.

May you have a Blessed and Joyous Easter. Jesus is the reason for this season, too !

Strawberries ....

This prim bunny will be listed on ebay this evening. Tucked inside the rusty wire basket that I made are some ripe, sweet prim strawberries from Ol' Mc Ornery's garden.

I have noticed strawberries are now in the grocery stores and just look so yummy , but I haven't bought any yet.

Here in Pennsylvania we had brilliant sunshine, totally blue sky and warmer weather than usual today, and it was just wonderful !

I didn't get a chance to enjoy much of it, though, as I finished up making the bunny, taking photos, and listing her on ebay.

I had to delete my last post because of some pervert's lewd comment. Most of it was blocked out but had the words DVD and sex on it. It would be nice if people like this would play in their own backyard !

Groundhog ( Day ) Chili

Since there is going to be six more weeks of winter, ( darn groundhog ) I thought it would be a great day to make a big pot of chili.

Most of the ingredients are pictured above, except for a teaspoon of sugar sprinkled over the tomatoes and of course, the groundhog.. I mean ground chuck. :o) Here is my chili recipe:

1 3/4 lb. package ground chuck (one and three quarters pound )
1 28 oz. can whole tomatoes, cut them up in the pot
1 28 oz. can diced tomatoes
1 teaspoon of sugar sprinkled over the tomatoes in the pot
1 16 oz. can light red kidney beans, drained
1 16 oz. can dark red kidney beans, drained
1 16 oz. can chili beans, drained slightly
1 onion, diced
1 medium size green pepper, diced
1 stalk of celery , diced..optional
1 -2 tablespoons of olive oil
about 1 to 1 1/2 cups water added

I don't really measure my spices.

Start out with 2 tablespoons of chili powder.. add more if you like it spicier.
1/2 teaspoon cumin, optional
a few good dashes of garlic powder
a few good dashes of onion powder
a pinch or two of Italian seasoning
about three pinches or so of oregano

Brown the ground chuck and add to the pot of beans and tomatoes. Saute the diced onion, green pepper and celery in the olive oil until transparent.. watch it doesn't burn. Add to the beans, tomatoes and ground chuck. Add about 1 to 1 1/2 cups water. Add your spices. Bring to a slight boil then let it simmer all day. I use a heat diffuser on my burner. You can buy a heat diffuser at a kitchen store. ( I have a gas stove. )

Taste the chili about two hours after simmering. Add more chili powder (and cumin) if desired. You can also add some crushed red pepper flakes, if desired, for a hotter type chili.

Serve with cornbread or crackers and a salad ! Chili is also great for a super bowl get together. Serve with sliced cheeses, crackers, tortilla chips. Add a vegetable tray and some dip !

Happy Groundhog's Day ! Not for us, though, that live in Pennsylvania.. six more weeks of winter ! :o(

Stella did arrive and I haven't stopped smiling since she got here. I can't even tell you how much I like her - it makes me happy every time I see her. It is everything about her but especially the mask - it's just too much : ).
This is truly one of the best things I've ever purchased for myself. And, I have to tell you too that was the most fun I've ever had opening a package - ever!
She's taken up her post and she's the first thing you see when you come in the front door. I've got an army of people coming in next weekend so they'll all get to see her too! They'll be very envious : ).
Thank you so much for bringing this entertainment into my life! She'll be treasured.
Thanks for the bonus pumpkins too! This has been so much fun!!

Meet Stella Swampbottom ~ Debuting September 1st on TDIPT Mercantile

Caught in the spotlight !

Stella is masquerading this year as a witch. Wearing this *spooktacular* costume and toting her spider leg (beaded) trim bag, I am sure she will win first prize for the best attire! :o) She is 17 inches tall with her witchy hat. She is a tad plump with a round heavy weighted rag ( fabric scraps )and plastic poly pellet bottom, but please don't tell her I said that ! It must be from eating all those lollipops !

There is quite a lot of detail on her little witchy costume, her bag and mask. In the lighting, her color looks a little washed out; she is a warm coffee stained and cinnamon sage green and ivory.

She will be listed the evening of August 31st on TDIPT Mercantile for the month of September. Unless a handsome prince comes along and sweeps her off her feet ( little round bottom ) !

New Table and Chairs ! from the Antique Store

The print above the hoozier was a gift from a friend. I made a vingette from the vintage finds that I already had to complement the print.

This is my vintage kitchen and my **new** table and three chairs that I found a couple weeks ago in an antique store. The table has a porcelain top with leaves and has a drawer in one side. Even though I love the primitive look, I have a soft spot for a vintage kitchen and breakfast room. I made the cushions for the chairs from a piece of Longaberger ( basket ) fabric.

I made the long tiers on the windows from a store bought vintage style tablecloth and made the tiebacks with rick rack trim. The store bought valances match the tablecloth curtains.

The hoozier was a find 11 years ago for $200.

The white china cupboard was another steal at only $40.

The only thing missing from the photo is a homemade pie sitting on the hoozier !

The Cathedral of Learning and Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh

In the background of a couple of the photos is the Cathedral of Learning at Pitt University in Pittsburgh. These were taken in front of the Phipps Conservatory this past weekend. My sister and her boyfriend and my sister and me. My hair was blowing every which way but loose from the strong winds and is covering my face as you can see. The glass sculpture is hanging in the foyer of the Phipps Conservatory.

The photos were sent to me from my sister's camera as I totally forgot to take mine.

Ocean City, MD. and Assateague Island

We saw the Assateague ponies on our way out of Assateague.

The ocean on Assateague Island. It's very relaxing here at Assateague. No stores, no huge crowds, and no noise except for the sound of the waves and the seagulls.

Sunset on the bay of Ocean City from Talbot Street. In the foreground is the Angler Restaurant. Behind the Talbot Inn Motel, where I am standing on the second floor porch, is the M.R.Duck's Restaurant. The drawbridge is behind the post of flag but it is difficult to see. The Angler Restaurant has been in Ocean City for 70 years, I believe.

This is one great sign that is displayed in Ocean City !

My grandson, with the boardwalk in the background. The boardwalk has been in Ocean City since 1902. It has grown to three miles long.

This is Dumser's Dairyland Factory. It's been a part of Ocean City history since 1939. Of course, I had to try the original orange swirl cone.

A fishing pier on the inlet of the bay at Ocean City. You can fish here all day for a small fee.

I'm Back ! from Fourth of July Vacation !

This is a photo of some fireworks taken with a cellphone on the 4th on the beach at Ocean City, MD.

I hope to have more photos to share ...that is if my throw away camera took some decent photos that is !.. I didn't take my digital camera as I didn't know what the salt air might do to it.

We stayed on the bayside and I actually enjoyed it.. I have always stayed in an ocean front room before when vacationing there. Seeing the boats in the bay and the drawbridge open up were a treat. Also, some very pretty sunsets ! I could see the ocean from the porch at the motel. ( The Talbot Motel is a very nice and clean motel and reasonably priced. ) It was only two and a half blocks away. I loved walking the boardwalk in the mornings ! And looking at the ocean ! How I wish I could do that everyday !

We had lovely weather while there. It's hard to believe six days without rain. It sure beats the PA. weather ! I live in the wrong area of the country ! They have some local corn there in the area ready to eat already.. The magnolia trees were in bloom and the blue hydrangeas were beautiful !

Here I am back in reality and dirty dishes... !

This is Molly !... It looks like she can't wait until Halloween to show off her new costume and goodie bag! And her Mommy has just polished up her saddle shoes, so the scuff marks don't show ..:o)

She is one of my offerings to be listed on TDIPT Mercantile July 1st.

She is adapted and inspired from a dollie I made last year. The hat is inspired by an antique vintage one found in an antique store.

It's in There ! Spaghetti and Meatballs

In between making dolls and doing everyday mundane household chores, I do cook once in a while. I thought I would share my meatball and sauce recipe. The spices added are not measured, so I am giving a ballpark figure with the spices that I add..

The meatballs:

1 3/4 pound of ground chuck
2 eggs
2 pieces of Italian bread, torn in pieces
2-3 minced/chopped up fine cloves of garlic ( not the whole bulb )
Added about:
3 tablespoons of seasoned italian bread crumbs
2-3 tablespoons of parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon of oregano or so
several dashes of onion powder
"" "" "" garlic powder
dashes of black pepper
dashes of Italian seasoning
about 2 teaspoons of parsley flakes

Mix all together with clean hands and roll into little balls and place in a skillet with a little olive oil in it. Saute' on low and turn until brown on all sides.
Add meatballs to sauce with a tablespoon or two of the drippings. Makes about 24 meatballs.

Sauce:

28 oz. can of whole tomatoes, chopped up
28 oz. can of diced tomatoes
12 oz. can of tomato paste
I add a little chopped up fine garlic..maybe half of a clove
add a little water ..maybe a cup or so
maybe about 2 teaspoons of basil flakes
a teaspoon or so of sugar, optional
a "" " "" italian seasoning
dashes of garlic and onion powder
just a dash of oregano

Bring sauce just to boil then simmer on low all day long ! well, until dinner anyway. I have a gas stove and use two heat diffusers under my pot. Photo of a heat diffuser shown under red teapot.

I use the thin spaghetti ( San Giorgio ) and I usually make a big tossed salad to complete the meal. I use Good Seasons Italian dressing mix. You add your own vinegar and oil and water. And then at least you know where most of the ingredients come from.

I have been busy making this eagle and enjoying the warmer weather. I have even enjoyed trimming and pulling the weeds from the yard. Boy, it must have been a long winter ! I have done some vegetable planting in the garden and have sown some leaf lettuce seeds in a window box on the deck.

Dh and I took a ride to Altoona on Sunday, and, of course, had to stop at a craft store. A few miles down the road from Altoona there is an antique mall, and I found a few goodies. Buttons, an old tape measure and vintage antique hat pins.
